Introducing Chinese Herbal Tea

Chinese herbal tea is integral to traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). The herbal teas are typically made from dried flowers, seeds, leaves, dried fruit or roots. Different blends of herbal ingredients can achieve other goals and needs, but they are generally used to restore balance, cleanse the body, and promote overall wellness.

Main benefits of Chinese Herbal Teas:

  1. Balancing "Yin" and "Yang":

In TCM, Yin and Yang are complementary and interconnected forces that represent the dualistic nature of the universe. They are opposing yet interdependent energies that exist in everything, including the human body.

Yin represents the feminine, passive, and cooling aspects. It is associated with darkness, rest, coldness, and internal processes. Yin energy is often related to organs such as the liver, kidneys, heart, and spleen. Excess Yin results in cold hands and feet, poor blood circulation, and pale complexions.

Yang represents the masculine, active, and warming aspects. It is associated with light, movement, heat, and external processes. Yang energy is often related to organs such as the lungs, large intestine, stomach, and bladder. Excess Yang causes headaches, sore throats, facial redness, nosebleeds, and bad tempers.

Nowadays in modern life, we often consume meat, oily and deep-fried foods, which may produce excess "heat" in the internal body. In summer days, the hot weather may also increase the heat in the body. Some herbal teas can help to cool down the inner heat, such as 24 Herbs Tea (廿四味; ya sei mei), Prunella vulgaris (夏枯草; ha fu chou) and green tea.

On the other hand, people with cold limbs, slow circulation, lack of energy and weak immune system may consider of having excess "Yin" in the body. They may consume "Yang" herbal tea to balance the body, such as ginseng tea, ginger tea, goji berry tea, red tea and black tea.

  2. Detoxify the body:

We are often exposed to environmental pollutants, chemicals, and heavy metals in the air as well as the food and water we consume, hence it is important to maintain a habit of drinking herbal tea that can help eliminate toxins and waste that have settled in our kidneys, intestines and liver. Dandelion tea, chrysanthemum tea, and lotus leaf tea are renowned for their detoxifying properties. They aid in flushing out toxins, supporting liver function, and promoting healthy digestion.

  3. Cell Recovery:

We are often exposed to free radicals such as cigarette smoke, air pollution, and sunlight. These free radicals may trigger aging and cell damage. Drinking herbal tea with high antioxidants ingredients may help to support normal cellular function and reduce the chance of some major diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and Parkinson’s disease. Incorporating antioxidant-rich herbs into your diet or consuming them as herbal teas can provide numerous health benefits. Herbal ingredients such as ginger, ginseng, senna leaves, green tea and turmeric are rich in antioxidants.
